CORROSION CONTROL OF CORROSIVE GASES: Small concentrations, serious consequences in data centers.
EU standard 2002/95/EC, or RoHS (Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment), which was implemented in July 2006, restricts the use of hazardous substances in the manufacture of electrical and/or electronic equipment.
One of the banned substances is lead (Pb), which is used for soldering circuit boards and other components in hard disks, servers, etc.
To make equipment that is free from lead, the Pb has been replaced by materials which are much more sensitive to the corrosive agents in the air. Consequently, the monitoring of air quality in data centres is a key factor in preventing faults in infrastructures.
According to the ISA 71.04.1985 standard (Environmental Conditions for Process Measurement and Control Systems: Airborne Contaminants), there is a very simple quantitative method for determining the corrosiveness of air in data centers: corrosion coupons (copper and silver), which, after a period of exposure and subsequent analysis, allow the corrosion control of the atmosphere to be determined, according to the following classification:
